Earthquake in Assam: Earthquake tremors were felt in Morigaon district of Assam in the early hours of Thursday. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the magnitude of this earthquake was measured at 5.0 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred late Thursday night at 2:25 am, the epicenter of which was located at a depth of 16 kilometers from the ground.
Tremors felt in Guwahati and other districts
Earthquake tremors were felt in many districts of Assam including Guwahati. However, there is no news of any major damage or loss of life and property so far. An earthquake of 5.0 magnitude is considered to be of moderate category, which can shake the items kept in the houses, there may be a slight sound and minor damage.
High risk of earthquake in Assam
Assam is one of those states of India where earthquakes occur frequently. This area falls in seismic zone (seismic zone) V, which is the most earthquake prone area in the country. Many major earthquakes have occurred in Assam in history too. These include the 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake (magnitude 8.6) and the 1897 Shillong earthquake (magnitude 8.1). Both these earthquakes are counted among the most powerful earthquakes in history.

Earthquake also occurred in Bay of Bengal
It is worth noting that earlier on Tuesday, an earthquake of 5.1 magnitude also occurred in the Bay of Bengal. According to the National Center for Seismology, this earthquake was recorded at 6:10 am. An official of the Indian Meteorological Department said that this earthquake was recorded near Puri in Odisha. The earthquake was at a depth of 91 kilometers in the Bay of Bengal.
Tremors were also felt in Kolkata
Due to the earthquake in the Bay of Bengal, tremors were felt in many parts of Kolkata and West Bengal. However, there was no damage. Local people said that due to the tremors, there was an atmosphere of panic for some time.

According to experts, there is a possibility of major earthquakes in Assam and the northeastern states. In such a situation, people need to be always alert. Instead of panicking during an earthquake, one should go to an open place and stay away from any tall building or electric poles.
