National Safe Motherhood Day: Every year on April 11 India observes ‘National Safe Motherhood Day’ aimed at raising awareness about the health and safety of mothers. On this occasion a common question that arises in the minds of many women is—Is it difficult to conceive after the age of 35? On this topic Dr. Shaili Sharma a gynecologist at Cloudnine Hospital Faridabad has shared important insights.

Risks of Conceiving After the Age of 35:

A woman’s fertility declines with age. After the age of 30 this ability starts to decrease gradually and after 35 it drops more rapidly. The main reason for this is the decrease in the number and quality of eggs. At birth women have approximately 1 to 2 million eggs in their ovaries which reduce with age.

After the age of 35 pregnancy can involve the following risks:

  • Risk of miscarriage: The chances of miscarriage increase with age.
  • Chromosomal abnormalities: There is a higher risk of disorders like Down syndrome in the baby.
  • Pregnancy complications: The chances of high blood pressure pregnancy diabetes and pre-eclampsia rise.
  • Higher chances of C-section: The probability of cesarean delivery is higher compared to normal delivery at this age.

Ideal Age for Conception:

From a scientific perspective the age between 20 and 30 years is considered the most suitable for conception. During this time women’s fertility is at its peak and the risk of complications during pregnancy is minimal. However in today’s times due to career education and personal priorities many women are planning late motherhood which is absolutely possible with the right knowledge and a healthy lifestyle.

Essential Tips for a Safe Pregnancy After 35:

  • Pre-conception check-up: Before conceiving get a complete health check-up including tests for thyroid diabetes and blood pressure.
  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle: Eat a balanced diet exercise regularly and manage stress effectively.
  • Folic acid intake: Taking sufficient folic acid before and during pregnancy reduces the risk of neural tube defects in the baby.
  • Regular medical consultation: Stay in regular contact with a doctor during pregnancy and get all the necessary tests done.
  • Avoid harmful habits: Stay away from smoking alcohol and drugs as these negatively affect fertility and fetal development.
