Pahalgam attack: Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a quick decision to cut short his visit to Saudi Arabia after the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack claimed the lives of 26 people, mainly tourists. It is being considered as one of the deadliest attacks in the region since the 2019 Pulwama attack. Prime Minister Modi returned to Delhi on Wednesday morning and immediately got down to work by convening a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security. This quick response underlines the gravity of the situation and the government’s commitment to deal with the aftermath of the attack.
PM Modi’s meetings and reaction on return
On his return, Prime Minister Modi wasted no time in gathering top officials to discuss the situation in Kashmir. He held meetings with External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and other key officials. The main topic of the meeting was the Pahalgam terror attack and how to deal with its aftermath domestically and internationally. The attack has sparked widespread anger and grief across the country, with citizens and political leaders demanding swift justice for the victims. The government is taking the matter very seriously, as evidenced by the prime minister’s immediate return and decisive action.
Terrorism discussed in Saudi Arabia; Crown Prince’s strong support
The issue of terrorism in Kashmir was raised during Prime Minister Modi’s meeting with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman before returning to India. Both leaders condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with India. Crown Prince Salman described the attack as “inhumane and reprehensible”, and also stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Though the meeting was delayed by about two hours to give the Prime Minister a chance to assess the situation in Kashmir, it was clear that India and Saudi Arabia were united in their stand against terrorism. Despite diplomatic discussions, Prime Minister Modi decided not to attend the scheduled dinner with the Saudi Prince, prioritising the need to return home to address the crisis.
Global support and strong message against terrorism
The global response to this attack has been overwhelming. Notably, US President Donald Trump expressed his condolences and support to India, saying that the United States stands firmly with India during these difficult times. Trump reaffirmed the US’ commitment to support India in the ongoing fight against terrorism. This statement not only strengthens the relationship between the two countries but also sends a clear message to those responsible for the attack. Coming back home, Prime Minister Modi strongly condemned the terrorist act on social media. He vowed that those responsible for this heinous attack will not go unpunished, promising a firm and unwavering response. This resolve by the Prime Minister is in line with India’s long-standing stand against terrorism, and the government has indicated that steps will be taken to ensure justice for the victims of Pahalgam.
