The suicide of a 21-year-old NEET student in Tamil Nadu has given rise to a political controversy. In this case, AIADMK President Palaniswami has accused the ruling party DMK and Chief Minister Stalin. Palaniswami says that the cases of suicides of NEET students in Tamil Nadu have increased due to DMK. He even said that Chief Minister Stalin has blood stains of NEET students on his hands.
History of NEET Bill and role of DMK
Actually, it was a DMK MP who introduced the NEET Bill during the Manmohan Singh government. The notification of this bill came in 2010 and in 2012, DMK’s Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Gandhi Selvan introduced it in Parliament. After this, the NEET exam was conducted for the first time in 2013. Earlier in India there was All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT) and each state had its own entrance exam. After the arrival of NEET, separate entrance exams of the states were abolished. Palaniswami raised this issue and said that due to DMK, Tamil Nadu’s own medical entrance exam ended and now the children here have to give NEET, which has proved to be harmful for them.

Palaniswami’s allegation
Palaniswami wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “Before 2014, when Congress was in power at the Centre, DMK introduced NEET. DMK not only introduced the NEET exam but also went to the Supreme Court to stop the protests against it so that the exam could not be stopped. This move laid the foundation for destroying the medical dreams of Tamil Nadu students. Now DMK itself says that if it forms the government at the Centre, it will not allow the NEET exam to be held.” Palaniswami also said that the deaths due to NEET in Tamil Nadu are not a concern for the DMK.
Suicide due to fear of failure in fourth attempt of NEET
21-year-old Devadarshini committed suicide in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Her NEET paper had not gone well and she feared she would not be able to clear it this time too. Devadarshini had failed in this entrance exam thrice before and the fear of failing in the fourth attempt stressed her so much that she took this tragic step. This incident highlights the mental stress that students go through due to NEET and underlines the need for more serious action from the state and central governments on this issue.
